Home hope Prin Sirisommai set a new Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship record by shooting an outward 29 in the second round on Friday morning at the Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi, outside Bangkok.
Prin’s seven-under tally beat the previous best nine-hole score of 30 set by current Korean Amateur champion Lee Soo-min, who shot 30 in the first round in Singapore last year on his way to finishing runner-up, one shot behind Hideki Matsuyama.
Prin, who opened with a 70 on Thursday afternoon, teed off on hole one in Friday’s second grouping at 7.24am and opened with a par. He then took flight on the second, recording an eagle on the 563-yard, par-five second hole.
A fired-up Prin then tore up the course, firing five birdies in a row from holes three to seven, before cooling off with two pars to round off his sensational outward nine.
